For years, The Alternate Universe has worked tirelessly to deliver Utah the most nonpartisan, up-to-date news—no matter how hard it is to swallow. When taking a look at the massive success our enterprise has become, it’s not shocking that others are wanting a part of the pie.
Among these pie-oglers is the popular streaming service Hulu.
Recently, Hulu announced a new series—The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives—that seeks to “expose” the eyebrow-raising affairs of popular Mormon “MomTok” influencers. However, many are already recognizing this drama to be a rip-off of many stories that The Alternate Universe has already published.
“From our exposes about the ‘soft swinging’ epidemic to features on Draper Swig addicts all the way to Diet Coke and Xanax Barbie, Hulu surely had a lot of material to pull from,” says journalist Paul Hollywood.
“Our journalists are on their hands and knees, slogging through the mire to dig up truth for the public. And for Hulu to simply repackage our work with not so much as a nod to our organization is grounds for a lawsuit,” comments head co-editor Cameron Frye.
Ed U. Keighted, a longtime Alternate Universe reader and superfan, weighed in with his thoughts.
“The show is one big joke. The whole thing. To think you can just look over the shoulder of the finest news source in Utah and masquerade their work as your own is laughable.”
A court date has not yet been set. While it is likely that The Alternate Universe will have the upper hand in litigation, questions still remain.
Will Hulu cite their sources? How much is a lawyer again? Oh wait, do we even have the money for that?
Perhaps only time will tell.
