In April of this year, the National Hockey League announced that the Arizona Coyotes would be moving from Tempe, Arizona to Salt Lake City. As part of the agreement to sell and move the team, the name “Coyotes” must be reserved for a potential new expansion team in Arizona. In order to pick a name, the new owner Ryan Smith previously said that the fans will decide the name of the team.
Smith Entertainment Group (SEG) began conducting online voting to narrow down the list of potential names. After multiple rounds of voting, rumors abound with confirmation of the new name. A recent leak shows that the new name for the new Utah NHL franchise will be “The Hockey Club at Temple Square.” The name did not appear on the survey, but the LDS Church reportedly had missionaries from all over the world submit write-in votes in order to get the name ranked higher.
“I love it,” said Lahneigh McHughson. “I can listen to TABCATS on the way to see H-CATS.”
Smith explained the reasoning for the name, “We want the name to represent Utah, and despite not playing right in Temple Square now, nothing better represents Utah. They will also pair perfectly with the Utah Hymns.”
He later whispered, “We also believe that naming the team as such will increase the potential funding from the government and the Church for the new arena.”
The team will play the rest of this season as the Utah Hockey Club and will adopt the new name next year.
