Beyoncé Performs “16 Covered Wagons” at General Conference

In an effort to compete in the ratings with the Men’s Final Four games, the Church enlisted the help of singer Beyoncé. The “Halo” singer agreed to perform at the Saturday Evening Session of General Conference in order to promote her new album Cowboy Carter.

With the help of the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square and the accompaniment of the organ, Beyoncé performed a new arrangement of “16 Carriages.” She also changed the lyrics to be about the pioneers crossing the plains in this unique performance. (Surprisingly, she changed very few lyrics as the song already had some similar themes.) This one-time version of her hit single is aptly titled “16 Covered Wagons.”

Before the performance, the “Single Ladies” singer was asked to bear a short testimony. “You could say this is part 2.5 of my trilogy project as this version is very related,” said Beyoncé. “We all go through struggles in life, whether you grew up in Texas in the ’80s or the Great Plains in the 1800s.”

In a post-session press conference, President Russell M. Nelson shared his thoughts and reasoning behind bringing on the 32-time Grammy Award winner. “We figured it would be a great way to show our interfaith cooperation. ‘Still workin’ on my life, you know/Only God knows, only God knows/Only God knows.’ That sentiment really speaks to people of all creeds. Hmm, maybe we should get Creed to perform at conference in October.”
