Controversial: BYU Professor Obeys Christ’s “Yea, yea; Nay, nay” Command

When reading Matthew 5:37 this week, “But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil,” BYU Professor Ryan Farrell realized he could use his Computer Science training to fulfill the Savior’s command. So he has begun lecturing his CS 393 class entirely in a series of “yeas and nays” in computer binary, where “yea” = 1 and “nay” = 0.

Dr. Farrell has seen some opposition in that about 90% of the class dropped. However, he feels strongly about following the Lord and has refused to change his lecture style.

The new lecture style is not entirely unpopular. The Alternate Universe interviewed one computer science student Trixie May who supported the professor. Trixie says, “This is the most clearly I’ve ever heard a professor communicate. If this catches on, humans may be useful for something in the future after all. Perhaps as batteries.”

When we asked Dr. Farrell if he would continue to teach classes like this, he replied “Nay.” Surprised, we asked for further explanation, and he elaborated, “Nay yea nay nay nay yea yea nay, nay yea nay nay yea nay nay yea, nay yea nay yea nay nay yea nay, nay yea nay nay nay yea nay yea, nay yea nay nay nay yea nay nay.”

Dr. Farrell’s devotion to the gospel is truly inspiring.
