The true-crime mini-series Under the Banner of Heaven released its last episode on Hulu last night. Starring Andrew Garfield, the series follows the investigation of the murder of a Latter-Day Saint woman and her daughter. While most viewers were hoping that the last episode would solve the mystery and bring closure to the story, they were both disappointed and caught off guard last night. Instead of the hour-long episode viewers were used to, pressing play on the last episode of Under the Banner of Heaven opened a personal Zoom call with the bishop of the viewer.
We sat down with Under the Banner of Heaven viewer Bekah McClide who attempted to watch the final episode last night, and was instead met with a video call with her YSA ward’s bishop.
“I think you know why we’re meeting here today,” opened the bishop.
McClide tells us that she was then asked several in-depth questions about her reasoning for watching the show.
“Watching anti-Mormon material is never the way to find truth,” said McClide’s bishop. “Truth can be found through sincere prayer and by consuming only church-approved literature and media.”
After several awkward minutes of questioning, McClide told the Alternate Universe that she finally was able to give the bishop a satisfactory reason for watching the show.
“I finally told him that I have this list on my phone of like 5 men that I’m attracted to, so I can’t be a lesbian. Seeing Andrew Garfield trying to be a good dad definitely got him added to the list.”
This reasoning, evidently, made enough sense to the bishop. He decided to let McClide off with a warning, as long as she agreed to bear her testimony in front of the whole ward on Sunday.
