On Friday, the church announced that temple cafeterias will be closing in early 2022. Today, they announced that the space will be transformed into gyms. In a recent survey, 64% of temple recommend holders answered that they don’t attend the temple because they are busy working out. In light of this, church leaders hope the adjustment will increase temple attendance worldwide.
The purpose of this change is two-fold. The first reason is to encourage people to sign up for the 6 am sessions, which are normally empty because they interfere with Pump classes. Temple patrons will be able to do a few baptisms and then hit the gym before heading to work. The second reason for the change is to provide members of the church with a sin and temptation-free environment to work out in.
A church representative told the Alternate Universe “We want to remind members that their bodies are temples, and like temples, should be covered at all times. Even while doing hot yoga.”
BYU students agree that the changes will make it easier for them to attend the temple.
Emily Johansen said, “After conference, I felt inspired to get spiritual gains, not just physical gains. I’m planning on attending the temple every leg day”
Cameron Clark said, “It’s made me really think about what I am doing with my life. I don’t hit on girls at VASA anymore because I’d rather hit on girls who make the temple a priority.”
Temple gyms will be open during normal temple hours. Patrons will be expected to dress modestly and work out reverently. White tracksuits will be available to rent for patrons who have not purchased their own athletic temple clothing.
