Music festivals, radio stations, and now Brigham Young University have all distanced themselves from DaBaby following his crude homophobic remarks at Rolling Loud in Miami.
BYU spokesperson Toid McKay explained that after hearing that the rapper had songs titled “AMAZING GRACE” and “GOSPEL” he had seemed like a good fit.
“My bad on that one, I should have looked into him a bit more before we booked him.”
The effort to have a more diverse speaker lineup, DaBaby being joined by Martin Luther King III and NAACP Board Member William Barber II, seems to have backfired for the university.
“We were actively trying to avoid controversy by elevating the voices of minorities,” said McKay. “Why can’t we just have one win with this stuff?”
The announcement has received mixed responses.
“It’s not enough that they dropped him,” tweeted an anonymous gay student, “he should have never been on that list.” They continued, “It’s just so classic BYU to have someone like DaBaby as a forum speaker.”
Sophomore Dage Dayton felt differently.
“I for one was looking forward to hearing from him,” he said, “as we all know, wisdom comes from out of the mouth of DaBaby.”
