Five Musicians You Didn’t Know Were LDS

From the Tabernacle Choir to Saturday’s Warrior, the LDS church is a musical one. It should come as no surprise that some of the most talented musicians of the modern era got started singing musical arrangements in sacrament meeting.

Ed Sheeran

Sheeran is joined by a number of other talented vocalists/heartthrobs, such as Brandon Flowers and Tyler Glenn, that credit their religious upbringing for their heavenly pipes. These boys are doing the most to bring sexy back to organized religion since David Archuleta.

Nikki Minaj

Unlike other artists on this list, Minaj actually converted later in life. Her faith has made a major impact on her career, as she left the industry to start a family after realizing that is the purpose for which we are put on this earth.

Prince

LDS theology has deep ties to Prince’s life and work. His name actually comes from the teaching that we are all princes and princesses of heaven, which he first heard as a child in a junior primary class, and stuck with him through his life.

Truly, no artist has a deeper love for the doctrines of the church formerly known as the Mormon church, like the artist formerly known as Prince.

Christina Aguilera

Christina Aguilera’s parents were married in a Mormon ceremony. They divorced when she was seven years old, and she has since identified as Roman Catholic. Whether or not Christina was ever baptized is still unclear.

Billy Joel

Billy Joel is the Stake President of the Provo YSA 21st Stake. His calling is reportedly extra stressful, because of his second calling as a backup piano player in his ward, a role that many refer to as a “piano man.”
