A custodian recently sent shockwaves through the Harold. B. Lee Library when he claimed to have discovered Brigham Young’s frozen head in the building’s restricted section.
Caden McCoy is a student at Brigham Young University who started working in the library last week as a custodian. The job was simple: clean the building. However, a part of McCoy’s duties included cleaning the library’s “special collections” section. A special collection indeed was the frozen head of the university’s founder.
The library’s special collections section, a.k.a restricted section, is called locked case, existing to protect specific content from destruction and theft.
While we attempted to contact McCoy about his experience, it seems he is nowhere to be found. Roommates and friends of McCoy say they have not heard or seen him since the day he reported the incident.
“I’ll be honest, I’ve heard about it for years,” said a co-worker of McCoy. “But I never truly believed until Caden told me he saw it. He just had a look in his eyes.”
While the library administration declines a statement on the matter, we were able to catch Kevin J. Worthen during his morning speedwalk to grab the newspaper and get his thoughts. The BYU President’s head was still attached to his body at this time.
“Haha! Goodness me, what a funny, silly, nosy young man… I’d get those eyes checked and think about my next move very carefully if I were him,” the President murmured. “How about this weather we’ve been having?”
For now, it seems BYU truly is a place to “enter to learn”- just within the limitations, of course.
