Brigham Young University held a record-breaking number of events to educate students, as well as allow them to celebrate black culture and history. From book clubs to lectures, the university offered a diverse selection of opportunities, with a less than diverse group of people running them.
“I’m glad that BYU is getting the recognition that it deserves,” said one former resident of Provo. “This is exactly the recognition it deserves.”
Many students reportedly enjoyed attending events. Braxton Brigham said, “Honestly, I think if more schools held black history events led by white people they would have better attendance.” He elaborated, “Anti-racism just sounds so much more reasonable when the person who’s saying it looks like me.”
Not everyone gave the same glowing endorsement as Brigham, with some outright criticizing the university, and others dismissing this astounding feat of record-breaking as unimportant.
“Once again BYU wins in a category that no one else was competing for,” said Ana Jacobson, in the comments of a BYU Instagram post. “This is just like ‘stone-cold sober’ or ‘university with the hottest religion teachers’ all over again.”
