Over the past month, @matchmakerbyu on Instagram has been very popular. They have been taking in survey answers and attempting to match people according to what they see as compatible traits. Early on they had far more women answer the survey. They said they would end submissions when they had the same number of guys and girls answer their survey. New information suggests that was not the full truth.
A recent investigation has revealed that the whole operation was a scheme to reinstate polygamy. @matchmakerbyu is actually funded and supported by the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a break-off denomination that practices polygamy. When matches were sent out, every guy who had participated received three to five matches. Almost all were shocked (a few were far too eager at the prospect.)
Many students that participated recalled some of the questions to be suspicious. Mara Jenkins, a junior, said she had wondered why so many questions asked about interactions with other girls: “There were a ton of questions that asked about gossiping, jealousy, and fighting. They were way too specific.” Daniel Cook, a sophomore, said. “I had one question that seemed totally irrelevant: ‘If you had to get remarried, what traits would you look for that you haven’t listed already in this survey.’ That seemed crazy at first, but I guess it makes sense now.”
