During Wednesday night’s vice presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Mike Pence, a fly was seen on camera for several minutes. The fly eventually landed on Pence’s head and stayed there. The scene was quite comical for many as Pence hardly noticed. Reports today have revealed that the fly was actually a BYU drone used for spying on the University of Utah.
The drone was developed in tandem by the Athletics department and the Honor Code Office for various purposes. The Athletics department wanted to use it to get an advantage over Utah sports. Recent history shows that they used the drone too much for volleyball and not enough for football.
The Honor Code Office participated in development so that they could spy on any BYU students spending time there. The HCO sees the University of Utah as a wicked place where people could potentially break the Honor Code. This possibility excites them as they have nothing better to do than find fault where it is not. They were hoping to use this as a test run before implementing a similar system on BYU’s campus and eventually all of Provo.
A representative from BYU stated that on Wednesday night the drone was controlled by a member of the political science department who was mad that the debate was held at the University of Utah. Landing the drone on Mike Pence’s hair was supposed to be an act of defiance that would make them regret having the debate there instead of BYU.
