Mike Bloomberg targets college voters; pays BYU professors to advertise during lectures

The 2020 race for Democratic nomination anybody’s game, and Mike Bloomberg isn’t going to give up that easy. In recent weeks, Bloomberg has become notorious for his advertising, particularly online.

“It hasn’t really been enough, though,” said Joe Johnson, a BYU junior who runs the instagram account @BYU4Bloomburg, “Mike decided he needed to step it up and really aim for the college vote, so we’re doing this now.”

According to an announcement released Wednesday evening, Bloomberg has decided to buy advertising time on college campuses, including BYU. The campaign will pay professors an undisclosed amount to mention Bloomberg’s ideals throughout their lectures.

The amount of money earned will be based on how many times the professor mentions the Bloomberg campaign in a positive light and how creatively the ad ties in with the source material of the class.

“I’m really excited for this initiative,” said BYU economics professor Mark Hampshire, “I mean, I’m definitely voting for Pete Buttigieg, but the Bloomberg ads are going to help me take my kids to Cabo.”

The initiative is offered to every department, including religion. James Holden, who teaches Book of Mormon Part 2 and Journal of Discourses: Deep Cuts, says that he plans to work the campaign into his lectures as well.

“I think I’ll start out with a casual “vote for Bloomberg” slide at the beginning of class, and then I’ll compare Mike Bloomberg to Captain Moroni. Not sure how I’ll do it yet, but I’ll figure it out. I really want to buy a jet ski, so it’s important.”

The Bloomberg campaign also notes via press release that it will pay anyone and everyone to declare that this advertising initiative is completely legal, ethical and in line with the honor code.
