At University Place mall in Orem, shoppers and workers alike are bracing themselves for what is shaping up to be another chaotic Monday night. Mall employees are still reeling from last week when an unknown number of FHE groups converged on the shopping center to play Where’s Waldo. The game, based on the popular book series, involves one person dressed in red and white stripes evading the rest of the group.
Last Monday, mayhem erupted as multiple Waldos were spotted and confusion led the hordes of college students to turn to violence. Reports of toes being stepped on and multiple injuries due to accidental elbowing were substantiated as demand for ice packs and frozen vegetables skyrocketed.
Police responded to the riots and were eventually able to coax the students to exit the mall and continue their game at Provo Towne Centre mall. In their wake, the FHE groups left a mall littered with debris. Mall workers spent the following days cleaning up Chick-fil-A cups and discarded styrofoam containers. Most of the stores have reopened and comfort dogs have been provided for the traumatized salespeople.
Sources say that tonight’s FHE will see a similar surge in college students, and may prove to be worse than last week. University Place officials have turned down all requests for interviews, commenting that they are simply too busy boarding up windows and equipping security guards with riot shields. Attempts to interview food court cashiers only resulted in tears and glazed-over stares.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to those brave mall workers and donations will be accepted in efforts to rebuild.
