Early Tuesday morning, the Provo Del Taco closed its doors for the final time after the restaurant’s lease expired. Some were saddened by the sudden news, as the Del Taco had become a favorite among those craving lackluster Mexican food at 3 AM.
Taco lovers need not fear, however. The following morning, Provo mayor Michelle Kaufusi announced that the Del Taco has been replaced by a Taco Bell, even though an existing Taco Bell is just 400 feet away on the same street. “We know how much BYU students love their fast food, and now they have a Taco Bell option even closer to campus. In Provo, we put the ‘más’ in live más.”
The new location adds to Provo’s impressive collection of Taco Bells, as there are now restaurants on 900 East, University Avenue, Cougar Boulevard, again Cougar Boulevard, and BYU campus.
While some might have concerns about too much market saturation, Taco Bell regional manager Scott Mientkiewicz isn’t too worried. “Have you ever seen a Taco Bell close? Yeah, I didn’t think so. And if our first location starts to see sales slip, we’ll just throw out a limited time only Baja Blast and chalupa deal or something.”
At press time, Taco Bell was in talks with BYU to add another Taco Bell on the south side of the Cougareat.
How is it impressive to have no other choice than Taco Bell, grossly below par, below Del Taco by far and certainly below Taco Time both of which Provo has now chased out? It’s the MacDonalds or Subway of tacos.
