BYU may only have a 53% acceptance rate, but campus tour guide Greg Henderson won’t let that stop him from getting visitors dead-set on attending the university. It’s a privilege that Greg loves more than anything.
“I like to start off my tours by having everyone state their GPA.” Greg told us while waiting for a group of grade schoolers to show up, “By then I have a good idea of who has absolutely no chance of getting in. Next, I disregard all that and try my best to get everyone hyped-up about every aspect of BYU.”
Parents, it turns out, are enjoying the process too: “My son Jimmy? Oh no, he didn’t get the ACT score needed to come here. But, the least we can do is buy him a wardrobe of BYU sweatshirts and get him emotionally invested in the sports teams.” Jenny Wilson explained while gliding past uncomfortable students on a golf cart safari-style.
Although getting kids excited about a school they’ll never go to can be fun, Greg always makes sure to end each tour with a dose of reality.
“No matter where you end up going to college, it’s ok. Just remember this.” He tells BYU hopefuls before parting, “You can always buy things from the BYU bookstore. Also your tithing money will be supporting this school no matter what. Have a great day!”
