Following a surge of public criticism, the BYU Honor Code Office released a statement today apologizing for earnestly believing that students were serious about keeping the promises they make every year in order to attend the private university.
“I think this has all been a great misunderstanding.” writes Jeff Summers, director of dress code violations, in a statement released to the press, “This whole time we’ve just been assuming that students are here and have signed the honor code because they actually plan on keeping the standards. Oops.”
Embarrassed Honor Code staff are now kicking themselves for dutifully enforcing something so many students have untruthfully agreed to and lied about in interviews. They hope their public apology will go a long ways in restoring faith in BYU as an institution, and will do their best to ignore the apparently dishonestly signed, legally binding documents.
“We understand if you’re offended and want to transfer to a different school. We’ll do our best to get your credits transferred.” Mr. Summers continued in his statement, “The good news is there’s UVU nearby, 35 other colleges in Utah, and another 4,928 in the United States as whole.”
