After years of unsuccessfully wrestling with the code of BYU’s most feared and hated website, the creators of Learning Suite have posted a straightforward, permanent apology on the login page. The message (a low-res “we’re sorry” followed by a pre-emoji-era frowny face) was designed to constantly beg the forgiveness of the thousands of BYU students who have ever used their course management software.
Although it may not go a long way in restoring the broken hearts and minds of those who continue to use Learning Suite every day, the creators hope it can at least provide some closure for those still recovering from trauma.
“I was the one who designed the instant messaging feature.” One programmer, who out of fear for his safety preferred to remain anonymous, related with free-flowing tears: “how was I supposed to know it would only be used by slackers looking for someone else’s notes? Or business majors hoping to validate their startup ideas?”
Despite Learning Suite’s sporadic shutdowns, anxiety-inducing mobile view, and depressing grade comparison feature, some aren’t so eager to complain. The controversial website has, after-all, provided a feeling of irritation that students and teachers have bonded over, and increased acceptance of the phrase “technical difficulties,” effectively creating a constantly viable excuse for those who can’t turn in their assignments on time.
With the apology message set to be constantly visible for as long as BYU continues to use Learning Suite, the creators now feel ready to move on to bigger and better things. Though their programming team won’t say, rumor has it they’re huge fans of Duo Push and looking to do something similar.
